Does hair loss always cause baldness?
Author : GeorgeHair loss in men, also known as male pattern baldness can be devastating for men, especially if it starts at an early stage. Men with a family history of alopecia can start experiencing hair loss as early as their twenties, which continues in the coming years of their life. Hair loss is a progressive condition, which means that if it is not treated on time, it will continue until you become almost or completely bald. However, not all men go completely bald by the time they reach the later years of life and some hair usually stays at the sides and back of the head. However, the exact extent of hair loss varies from person to person, which is why some people may go completely bald as they get older, whereas others may not.
In theory, once hair loss starts, due to any reason, it never really stops until diagnosed and treated properly. Oral and topical medications are common solutions to help prevent further hair loss and help the lost hair to grow back. However, these medical treatments are effective if hair loss is diagnosed at an early stage. Popular hair loss medications include Propecia and Rogaine, also known as Minoxidil which have been known to prevent or slow down hair loss. In most cases, they also help the lost hair to grow back. These non-surgical treatments can also reverse the miniaturization process and so that the hair becomes thick and healthy. Hair miniaturization is a process which causes hair to become shorter and thinner as compared to the rest of the hair on the scalp. Typically, hair in the miniaturization process starts to lose its colour over time and becomes finer and thinner and is eventually lost. Consulting a professional hair care specialist or dermatologist before using any of these treatments is a good idea, so you can start the one which will be best for you. Your doctor will also advice if you should start any of these non-surgical treatments, depending on your health and severity of hair loss, as they can cause side effects in some individuals.
Hair loss in men follows a distinct pattern, also known as Male Pattern Baldness. Hair is lost in a well defined pattern which starts at the temples. As it continues, hair starts thinning at the crown of the head, moving towards the centre and back, until only a rim of hair remains at the sides and rear of the head. If left untreated, it proceeds to complete baldness in some men, depending on hereditary, health and environmental factors. In women however, alopecia, or female pattern baldness never leads to complete baldness. Alopecia in women causes hair to become thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede, like in the case of men. Hair loss in women can be caused due to several reasons, such as from certain medications like birth control pills, certain skin diseases, hormonal abnormalities, iron or vitamin deficiency and an underactive thyroid. Diagnosing and treating the actual cause of hair loss in women can prevent further hair loss. Using Minoxidil, the only FDA approved drug or medication for the treatment of female pattern baldness can help the lost hair to grow back. Minodixidl has been known to grow hair in 20% to 25% of females who have started experiencing hair fall, and in most cases it stops or slows down hair loss and thinning.
If hair loss continues over several years, it cannot be treated with medical drugs as it causes the hair follicles to die. In such a case, men are only left with the option to go with hair transplantation, which is a surgical procedure that helps hair to grow again. Hair is taken from a donor area, usually from the back or sides of the scalp and transplanted to bald areas of the scalp. Other body parts such as the eyebrows can also be restored through hair transplant surgery. Modern techniques of hair transplantation use Follicular Unit Transplantation which group 1 – 4 hair follicles together to mimic natural growth of hair. The procedure is not painful at all, and usually lasts a couple of hours. In most cases, a single session is enough to restore the lost hair.
Treating an underlying hair loss problem on time can help save more hair from being lost. The treatment you decide to go with is a choice which you have to make, which can be surgical or non-surgical.
