Question:
I recently bought Natural Calm at a local health food store. On the advice of an MD, I was told
to get liquid magnesium for several health concerns I have. I took it as advised at bedtime,
and instead of calming, I felt stimulated. I did not eat or drink anything else that could have
affected me in that way. I did not get the sleep I needed that night, and am afraid to take it again.
My husband said to try it during the day, but I am afraid that it might actually work when I don’t
want/need it to. Have any thoughts or suggestions?

Answer:

I personally had the exact same reaction. For a period of time (around 3 months) I took it in the morning and it still did help me sleep at night, but it did not make me drowsy in the day time. It gave me energy instead. I now take it at night before I go to bed.

Magnesium is necessary for over 300 bodily functions and most people are
deficient in magnesium. One major function that magnesium is necessary for is the ability to relax. When your muscles contract, it requires calcium for that process to take place; when your muscles relax, it requires magnesium for that process to take place. When athletes exercise real hard, they deplete their minerals. Magnesium is one of the first minerals to be depleted and when they run out of magnesium, they often experience cramping in their muscles, for example.

If I yelled “Danger”, calcium would enter your cells and your body would go into a “fight or flight” situation. Your body is now “stressed”. When the danger has passed, the calcium would leave your cells and magnesium would enter your cells allowing you to relax. If you don’t have enough available magnesium, then your body can’t really
relax and de-stress. This is the state many people are in; they don’t have enough magnesium to relax and we need to relax to have a
great night’s sleep. Eighty percent of people find that they obtain a better sleep when they take Natural Calm before they go to bed because it helps them to relax.

Magnesium is also necessary for our cells to be able to transport energy. The magnesium helps the cell to “go” and is like the spark plug of a car. We need our “engine” to “fire” on all cylinders. So magnesium will give us energy.

We suggest that people take Natural Calm at night half an hour hour before going to bed on an empty stomach. This is for a few reasons. Magnesium (actually all minerals) needs to be in an acidic form to be absorbed into our bodies. Natural Calm is pH balanced to allow you to absorb the magnesium. If you have food in your stomach, that food could change the pH, lowering the amount of magnesium that is available to your body. Most people have no food in their stomach half an hour hour before bed and they are not going to eat after that. Also, drinking Natural Calm half an hour hour before going to bed will help you obtain magnesium in your system right before bed so your body can use it to relax and help you sleep. So the best time, we believe is half an hour hour before bed
when you are looking for an effective
insomnia remedy.

You can take Natural Calm anytime. Taking it on a full stomach is better than not taking it at all. If you eat breakfast at 8am and lunch at noon, you could try taking it at 11am.

Once you take Natural Calm for a while, and you build up your stores to a good level, you will find that it will most likely not keep you awake at night.

Hair loss in men, also known as male pattern baldness can be devastating for men, especially if it starts at an early stage. Men with a family history of alopecia can start experiencing hair loss as early as their twenties, which continues in the coming years of their life. Hair loss is a progressive condition, which means that if it is not treated on time, it will continue until you become almost or completely bald. However, not all men go completely bald by the time they reach the later years of life and some hair usually stays at the sides and back of the head. However, the exact extent of hair loss varies from person to person, which is why some people may go completely bald as they get older, whereas others may not.

In theory, once hair loss starts, due to any reason, it never really stops until diagnosed and treated properly. Oral and topical medications are common solutions to help prevent further hair loss and help the lost hair to grow back. However, these medical treatments are effective if hair loss is diagnosed at an early stage. Popular hair loss medications include Propecia and Rogaine, also known as Minoxidil which have been known to prevent or slow down hair loss. In most cases, they also help the lost hair to grow back. These non-surgical treatments can also reverse the miniaturization process and so that the hair becomes thick and healthy. Hair miniaturization is a process which causes hair to become shorter and thinner as compared to the rest of the hair on the scalp. Typically, hair in the miniaturization process starts to lose its colour over time and becomes finer and thinner and is eventually lost. Consulting a professional hair care specialist or dermatologist before using any of these treatments is a good idea, so you can start the one which will be best for you. Your doctor will also advice if you should start any of these non-surgical treatments, depending on your health and severity of hair loss, as they can cause side effects in some individuals.

Hair loss in men follows a distinct pattern, also known as Male Pattern Baldness. Hair is lost in a well defined pattern which starts at the temples. As it continues, hair starts thinning at the crown of the head, moving towards the centre and back, until only a rim of hair remains at the sides and rear of the head. If left untreated, it proceeds to complete baldness in some men, depending on hereditary, health and environmental factors. In women however, alopecia, or female pattern baldness never leads to complete baldness. Alopecia in women causes hair to become thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede, like in the case of men. Hair loss in women can be caused due to several reasons, such as from certain medications like birth control pills, certain skin diseases, hormonal abnormalities, iron or vitamin deficiency and an underactive thyroid. Diagnosing and treating the actual cause of hair loss in women can prevent further hair loss. Using Minoxidil, the only FDA approved drug or medication for the treatment of female pattern baldness can help the lost hair to grow back. Minodixidl has been known to grow hair in 20% to 25% of females who have started experiencing hair fall, and in most cases it stops or slows down hair loss and thinning.

If hair loss continues over several years, it cannot be treated with medical drugs as it causes the hair follicles to die. In such a case, men are only left with the option to go with hair transplantation, which is a surgical procedure that helps hair to grow again. Hair is taken from a donor area, usually from the back or sides of the scalp and transplanted to bald areas of the scalp. Other body parts such as the eyebrows can also be restored through hair transplant surgery. Modern techniques of hair transplantation use Follicular Unit Transplantation which group 1 - 4 hair follicles together to mimic natural growth of hair. The procedure is not painful at all, and usually lasts a couple of hours. In most cases, a single session is enough to restore the lost hair.

Treating an underlying hair loss problem on time can help save more hair from being lost. The treatment you decide to go with is a choice which you have to make, which can be surgical or non-surgical.

Question:
Hi, I love your liquid vitamins!

I also take your Natural Calm Plus Calcium and have a question. I noticed there is 500 mg Vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Wouldn’t the ascorbic acid erode my teeth since it is liquid? Just as it would if I drank lemon water every day (which I don’t do for that reason)?

And thank you! I noticed you now make the Calm with Organic ingredients! Can’t wait to order my next batch especially now that it’s organic!

Thank you for your time and wonderful products,
- Gwen

Answer
Minerals need to be in an acidic solution to be absorbed by your body. While your stomach has acids in it, it is more preferred to have a mineral, like magnesium, in an acidic solution. It took a number of years to get the optimal blend and that is why we advertise it as a “Proprietary blend”. The proprietary blend is what makes the products have such a high bioavailability. I personally, squeeze a whole lemon into a mug, add warm water, and drink it first thing every morning as a cleanse and to help alkalize my body. I don’t believe my drink is harming my teeth because it is so short lived on my teeth and it helps to alkalize my body. The real problem, I believe is that people who drink acid producing products like soda pop, have acidic bodies and their salvia is acidic all the time. My saliva used to have a pH of 5.8, now it is at 6.8 and I am working to get it to 7.4 which is our body’s optimal pH level. Most of the foods we consume are acidic, like proteins and sugars. Those acidic foods will erode our enamel because they cause our body, including our saliva, to become acidic. Lemons, while they are acidic, they actually alkalize our body; same with the Calm drinks. Please refer to the article http://naturalcalmmagnesium.com/blog/?p=44 where I explain it more.

Question
I have a question regarding your product Natural Calm Magnesium. My doctor told me that taking Magnesium for a prolong time it can irritates the colon. Is this true? I must say that since I have been taking this product in the evening, I am so regular every morning. However, it would be very sad if this product irritates the colon. Could you be able to reply to me? I am very curious to know your answer.

Answer
Your doctor is partly correct. Most laxatives are made from cheap forms of magnesium like magnesium oxide. Many people rely on these to keep regular. It is never good to use a laxative to keep regular and to depend on a laxative. We should have a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and fibre to let our body function properly. Not drinking enough water can also cause constipation. If you are constantly constipated, that is not good for your colon either and that will also cause problems and irritate your colon.

Magnesium, a gentle laxative, helps to prevent constipation by relaxing your colon walls when you are under stress, have anxiety, or have too many worries. It helps to relieve tension in colon walls allowing for a normal peristaltic action.

Natural Calm is a magnesium supplement that is very absorbable by your body. When you begin to take more magnesium than your body needs, it gets eliminated in your colon and hydrates (attracts water) it. Water in your colon makes your stools softer and is easier on your colon.

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in our body and 95% of the population is deficient. Being deficient can irritate the body in general. I personally take Natural Calm every night before I go to bed.

My suggestion is to listen to your body and do what you feel is best. Your doctor is there to give you knowledgeable advice and can bring a wealth of experience but ultimately, you are responsible for your health.

The magnesium gel is the same as the magnesium oil except it is made of 50% oil and 50% gel, making it half of the potency. Magnesium oil is not really oil; it is viscous sea water with the sodium removed. The viscous solution is thicker than water and looks like a light oil.

Many of the minerals found in our soil end up in the ocean. These minerals are good for us and are contained in magnesium oil. We go far away from shore and harvest sea water there, and then we remove most of the water content and the sodium chloride content. What we are left with is mostly magnesium chloride and lots of great trace minerals.

The way you apply magnesium oil is by applying it on your skin. The magnesium will be absorbed through your skin i.e. transdermal. You can apply it anywhere including arms, legs and stomach. Some people find that it is too concentrated and they don’t like the way it feels on their skin. We suggest that you either dilute the oil with water or that you use the gel. Start out with 5 drops of magnesium oil on your skin and keep increasing the dose until your stools are comfortably loose; then you have reached the optimal level.

Personally, I use the oil as an underarm deodorant. While it is not a deodorant, the reason why we need a deodorant is because the odor under our arms is from bacteria. The oil, being a salt, is an anti-septic and therefore kills the bacteria. I have found it very effective. I also use it to brush my teeth with. I put 4 or 5 drops on my toothbrush and brush for 2 minutes and then rinse.

Natural Calm is best taken on an empty stomach and ½ an hour before bed is ideal. I personally take a heaping teaspoon every night before I go to bed. We recommend starting out with a teaspon and keep increasing the dose until your stools are comfortably loose; then you have reached the optimal level.

Insomnia Continues

Author : George

Question:
I have been using Natural Calm. While I have seen some benefits from Natural Calm, my insomnia continues. I also suffer from fibromyalgia. The other meds I take continue to cause chronic constipation. I using a tablespoon at night. How much should I be using. I have been thru almost 2 bottles of Natural Calm.

Answer:
Here are a few insights into magnesium.
It is the fourth most abundant mineral in our body and is necessary for over 350 body functions.
If we don’t have sufficient magnesium, one or more of those 350+ body functions could not perform well and give us symptoms.
Magnesium is necessary for our muscles to relax and we need to relax to sleep.
When we get stressed, like in a “Fight or Flight” situation, calcium enters our cells, When it is time to relax from that stress, calcium leaves and magnesium enters in. Read this article for more detail. www.calmnatural.com/magnesiumcalciumstress
The more stressed you are, the more magnesium your body will use. Illness will bring on more stress because you worry a lot about your future, finances, etc.
Drugs, alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs also deplete magnesium. The requirements for magnesium goes up, the more medications one is taking.

If your body needs more magnesium (e.g. for your blood or heart), it will take it from your muscles (this is partly what causes symptoms like fibromyalgia ) and put it to the more critical areas.
Your brain uses a lot of magnesium; the more you think and use your brain, the more magnesium you use up.
It is really hard to tell medically whether or not you have enough magnesium and we believe the only way to tell is by symptoms and logic.
You can’t get too much magnesium (unless you have bad kidneys) and any excess will go to your colon and hydrate it. (I.e. you will experience loose stools.)
Most laxatives use a cheap form of magnesium as their main ingredient. We recommend Natural Calm as it is highly bio-available and will be absorbed by your body until you at the excess level. After that it can help deal with your constipation. Most tablets are only 30-40% bio-available, but Natural Calm is around 80% bio-available.

With everything you are telling me, I would suggest you slowly increase your magnesium intake until your bowels are comfortably loose. Then you will know you are at the optimum level.

Magnesium is not the total answer, but magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral and is not that plentiful in our foods. (read more here) It is water soluble so most of it disappears as our foods become more and more processed. Magnesium is vital to our health so we really believe that magnesium deficiency is the basis for a lot of ailments. Though it is not the answer to everything, it definitely is a good place to start.

Part of your answer also is exercise, positive mental health, and spiritual connectedness (being at peace with yourself, those around you, and any spiritual being you may believe in).

Question
The RDA of magnesium for woman is 320 mg. I have been using 3tsp (615 mg of Natural Calm) is this dangerous? What about too much magnesium and toxicity to the kidneys.

This is a good question. First of all, think about the RDA. They come up with one number for all women. A 100 lb woman gets the same RDA as a 200 lb woman. Understandably, then the government always wants to quote the lower numbers if they can only recommend one number across the board. I have talked to a few doctors too about magnesium and some of them just give a party line “be careful about your kidneys”. There are also lots of doctors who would disagree. Dr. Carolyn Dean, for example, believes that the RDA is the bare minimum and that we need more like twice as much.

  • Here are some things to consider about your magnesium intake
  • If you are 200 lbs you need more magnesium than a person who is 100 lbs.
  • If you are athletic or very active, your body requires more magnesium than a non active person
  • If you use your brain a lot, you use more magnesium than people who coast with their brains.
  • If you are under a lot of stress, you use more magnesium than someone whose life is stress free.
  • If you are on prescription drugs (or illegal street drugs or alcohol) you need more magnesium.

RDA is more like a guideline to give people an idea, not a maximum. With an RDA of 300-400, you at least know not to take 3,000 mg. It also is just enough to ward off outright deficiency.

The great thing about magnesium is if you take too much the excess gets eliminated through your colon. I.e. you will get the runs. So the optimum level is keep increasing your dose until your stools are comfortably loose (i.e. just slightly loose)

Too much magnesium being hard on the kidneys is more of a problem with hard to digest forms of magnesium like magnesium oxide (4% bioavailability). Most laxative medications are made from magnesium and they use forms like magnesium oxide. Many people depend on laxatives for a bowel movement and are constantly overloading their system with magnesium and that situation is more likely to be hard on your kidneys than taking a higher dose of a supplement. If your kidneys are relatively healthy, then you need not worry. If you have a kidney disease, then you need to have your doctor help you monitor your magnesium intake.

Ultimately, we need to get as much information as we can and then trust our bodies as to what we need.
